Independent Celebrants
Your Ceremony, Your Way.
One
of North Shields’s leading celebrants has spoken of the
growing importance of their profession in the UK today.
Rachelle explained that the official section of a
marriage was binding by law and therefore had to be conducted by a registrar –
couples will get that done quickly, often with just witnesses attending, and
then hold their celebrant-led ceremony.
“We
can conduct the ceremonies at a couples’ venue of choice – be it a beach, a
hilltop, forest or a family garden,” said Rachelle.
Celebrants
will conduct either semi, non-religious or spiritual ceremonies, and spend time
with their clients agreeing bespoke services, which are personal to the
individuals.
This is
the same with other ceremonies, such as naming and vow renewal – with services
often including light and sand symbols representing togetherness and lasting
partnership, said Rachelle.
“We
live in a world where choice is everything and people are looking for
ceremonies that are more individual and personal to them,” said Rachelle, who started
out as a celebrant at the beginning of
this year.
A
member of the professional body, the Association of Independent Celebrants,
(AOIC), Rachelle Harrigan, is one of the many thousands of celebrants in
the UK today.
“There
has to be an acceptance that, as a society, the way we view such ceremonies and
services, is changing and tradition has, in some areas, given way to
alternatives and that is what a celebrant will offer,” said Rachelle.
